Live scan is a digital, ink-free method of recording fingerprints electronically to accurately verify a person's identity biometrically, ensuring their distinct identity for criminal background checks before employment, licensure, or certification.
Make sure to bring a valid form of identification (see the acceptable ID List) along with the required paperwork requested by the live scan requestor. The process usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your fingerprints. All ten fingerprints are rolled and digitized with the scanner.
A Request for Live Scan Service is required. These are usually given to you by the company or organization requesting the Live Scan. The form must have an ORI number and the Authorized Applicant Type (these are usually prefilled). Please fill out Contributing Agency Information, Applicant Information and Level of Service before arriving for your live scan.
Your fingerprints will be sent to Cal-DOJ right after they are taken. The usual processing time from Cal-DOJ is just a few hours. Almost all fingerprint background check transactions are finalized within 48 hours. However, sometimes, transactions may take up to several weeks. For instance, transactions for older applicants can often take longer due to lower fingerprint quality or paper-based fingerprint records that require manual processing.

CAL-DOJ and FBI FEE: Varies from $0 to $81, based on the type of application.
California Department of Justice typically sends the result within 48 hours. However, it can take up to a few weeks. After 2 weeks, visit Cal-DOJ’s Live Scan status website https://applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov/ to check on the status of your transaction. You will be asked to enter the live scan assigned 10-digit Applicant Tracking identifier (ATI) for your transaction along with your birth date. You can find the ATI number on the Transaction History page. Please note that the ATI is a combination of capital letters and numbers (e.g. B123ABC789).
If the Cal-DOJ cannot locate your transaction, it does not mean they did not receive it. Generally, it means that they have not completed their processing. Wait a couple more weeks and try again. If after 4 weeks there is still no status, please contact us at support@ApplicantServices.com for further assistance. When emailing us, please include your ATI number, your name, and date of your Live Scan transaction.
The California Board of Nursing requires a full set of 10 fingerprints be submitted to both levels of service (the Department of Justice and FBI) when a nursing license is renewed. This is a requirement if you were originally fingerprinted with a hard card (Before 2009) and Digital Prints (before 2011) did not include FBI. With Live Scan, your fingerprints are submitted electronically to the DOJ and FBI which then forwards the results to the board.

You can request your own Live Scan through Luna Live Scan by filling out an application and paying the applicable fee. The report that you will receive will include your entire California criminal history from the Department of Justice. To remove a conviction from a Live Scan background check you must receive an expungement, pardon, or record sealing. Expungement in California does not remove a conviction from your record but instead changes the conviction to a dismissal.
This service can be provided to U.S. Citizens or permanent residents with a valid government photo identification.
The main advantage of using an FBI Channeler is to speed up the process of receiving a FBI History Summary Check Report. When requesting the report directly from the FBI, the process can take up to 16 weeks. FBI Channelers such as Miracle Mail Print and Business Center, can typically have the PDF version of report in about 24 hours.
However, channelers can only request Identity History Summary Checks for American citizens and permanent residents. Non-US citizens without permanent residence status must make the departmental order request directly to the FBI by submitting a application and a fingerprint card. If you have requested a physical report, the process usually takes 3 to 5 days.
